2024 YR4: What we know about the asteroid that could hit Earth

There is an estimated 2.3% chance that the 2024 YR4 asteroid is heading our way. Here's everything you need to know about the space rock - including how much damage it could actually cause.

Asteroid 2024 YR4, discovered on December 27, 2024, by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, is a near-Earth object with an estimated diameter between 40 to 100 meters. It has a 2.3% chance of impacting Earth on December 22, 2032. If it were to strike, the impact could release energy equivalent to 8 megatons of TNT, potentially devastating an area the size of Washington, D.C. The risk corridor spans from northern South America to southern Asia and parts of Africa. NASA and the European Space Agency are actively monitoring the asteroid, employing telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope to refine its trajectory and size estimates. Global space agencies are developing planetary defense strategies, including kinetic impactors and nuclear options, to potentially divert the asteroid. While the likelihood of collision remains low, the situation underscores the importance of continued surveillance and preparedness.
